Colombia's Leader Says 'I Would Resort to Weapons Again' if United States Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with Colombia's president have turned up the tone in their verbal conflict, further raising tensions bilaterally following US forces attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He runs narcotics facilities and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Rising Threats coupled with Claims

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the American leader suggested similar military action against Colombia, asserting the country is “very sick too” and led by an unwell individual involved in producing narcotics and distributing it to the United States."

While Colombia remains the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the business.

A Deteriorating Alliance

This nation has long been a key ally of the United States in the campaign against narcotics trade and received wide political approval from American politicians, but relations have deteriorated significantly since Trump was elected.

The nation's illicit drug economy is largely controlled by criminal organizations such as one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom laid down arms after a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Strong Response

Upon being questioned whether a military operation similar to Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump replied: "It sounds good to me personally."

The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the last century, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and I am not involved in narcotics," he affirmed.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he posted in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the hills. If they capture the nation's leader, which a significant portion of the population admires and supports, they will release the fierce spirit of the nation," he admonished.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed part of his youth belonging of the leftist M-19 armed organization although reports indicate that he never engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he participated in drafting the constitutional rewrite in 1991 and later became an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of Bogotá before being elected president.

"I made a vow to abstain from using arms again ... but in defense of my country I will take up weapons once more," he affirmed.

Increased Security and Broad Rejection

The Colombian defence minister reported that the national leader's security detail had received additional support.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump, but voices from across the political spectrum have rejected the threats of a US attack on Colombia.

Diplomatic and Economic Pressure

Washington revoked his travel authorization after he urged American soldiers to refuse orders that violate law. Later, in October, it placed economic restrictions against the president, his wife and various close collaborators.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces in the region and striking vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed strikes on maritime targets in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
