The US government stated it would offer limited relief to millions of SNAP users as the ongoing federal closure reached a unprecedented duration.
Amid growing concern for the around 42 million Americans participating in the food assistance program, the agriculture department declared it would employ reserve money to maintain benefits, albeit at merely 50% of the usual amount recipients normally obtain.
Resources for the initiative formally ran out on Saturday due to the US government shutdown, now in its 34th day with little indication of ending.
The decision came in a court filing after prior denials to provide critical funding on alleged legal grounds. A judicial authority had ruled the leadership could not refuse program funds as a result of the shutdown.
After the judicial ruling, the administration stated it would be "privileged" to authorize emergency funding for the program.
Officials indicated that funds could begin distribution by midweek, but stressed the need for additional clarification from the legal system on how to legally reallocate money for SNAP benefits.
Multiple authorities, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced emergency declarations to supply short-term resources for support. However, these amounts were projected to be a limited percentage of the typical national funding.
The government spending for SNAP amount to approximately $8 billion monthly in the United States.
